William Whitfield Smith Sr.
NEWPORT NEWS - William Whitfield (Bill) Smith, Sr. went home to be with his Heavenly Father on January 7, 2017. He was 84 years old. Bill was born in Pulaski, Virginia and was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and John Smith, and by his brother, Douglas Smith. Bill was a long time resident of Newport News and retired from Naval Weapons Station as an Ordnance Equipment Mechanic and was President of the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE). He also served for many years on the Board of Directors, Naval Weapons Station Credit Union. He was an active member and Deacon of Immanuel Baptist Church, Newport News beginning in the mid-1960s. He loved fishing on the Outer Banks, gardening, family vacations and reunions, taking his wife on trips, and spending time with his family and friends. Bill never met a stranger and was a friend to all. Bill leaves behind the love of his life, Donna Thompson Smith, who he was married to for 64 years; two daughters, Renee Smith Jeffers and Debra Smith Doty; his son, William Whitfield (Whit) Smith, Jr. (Amy); his sister, Betty June Childress; and his brothers Ralph Smith (Joyce) and Garnett Smith. He also leaves behind his son-in-law Tom Doty. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his four grandchildren, Tyler Whitfield Smith (Alyssa McPaters); Shelby Smith Steele (Travis); Andrew Doty and Nathan Doty. The family is grateful to his many friends and staff at The Gardens of Warwick Forest for enriching his life during the last 6 years. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 PM Friday, January 13, 2017 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Peninsula Rescue Mission, 3700 Huntington Avenue, Newport News, VA 23607. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
