William H. RAY Sr.
RAY, Sr., William H. 89, of Springfield, passed away Friday morning, January 13, 2017 at Oakwood Village. He was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on June 20, 1927, the son of the late Carl and Josephine P. (Head) Ray. Bill served his country in the U.S. Navy near the end of WWII. He attended the University of Louisville on a football scholarship and upon graduation, was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. Not looking forward to playing football in the snow, Bill began a varied career, ultimately serving as executive director of the Chambers of Commerce in Owensboro, Kentucky, Logansport, Indiana, Springfield, Ohio, Anderson, Indiana, Terre Haute, Indiana, and Kansas City, Kansas. Upon retirement, he returned to Springfield and briefly worked at Littleton & Rue Funeral Home and later at the Small Business Development Center, serving as executive director. He was a member of and Elder at Central Christian Church, a former member of Rotary and was a long-time supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, H. Fay (Pickett) Ray; daughter, Nancy Ray of Seattle, Washington; a son, Bill (Jeanne) Ray Jr. of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Aaron (Melisa) Ray, Ryan (Jody) Ickes, David (Olyvia) Ray, Alex (Sally) Ray, Andrew Ray, Lindsey Ray, and Jessica Lampe; six great grandchildren, Jacob, Samuel, Addison, Grayson, Kerry, and Kalib; a brother, Shirley G. (Doris) Ray of Owensboro, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Bob Ray in 2015 and a brother, Carl Ray. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Oakwood Village Skilled Nursing Facility for their loving and devoted care. A service in celebration of Bill's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in Central Christian Church, 1504 Villa Rd., Springfield with Pastor Carl Ruby officiating. The family will begin receiving friends at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Mercy Foundation, 100 W. McCreight Ave., Springfield, OH 45504
