WILLIAM POWELL Sr.
William Powell Sr. D.D.S., 81, passed away peacefully from this earth on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 in Bakersfield, CA, after a courageous four month battle with gastric cancer. "Bill" was born in Greenville, Mississippi, to Celestine Hall and Chester Powell on March 6, 1935. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School, Xavier University and Meharry Medical College, he served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. For 25 years he served the Bakersfield community in his private dental practice at 833 "H" Street. He was President of the Kern County Dental Society and continued practicing dentistry at San Quentin State Prison and later became Chief of dentistry at Wasco State Prison, for eleven years. He was an avid reader, and his favorite hobbies were golfing and fishing on his boat with his family and friends. Three words that best describe him are "fair, truthful and reliable." He was a firm believer in education and hard work and supported his family in their success. Wiliam is preceded in death by his mother Celestine Hall, father Chester Powell, and sister Evelyn P. Johnson. He is survived by his wife Carolyn of 61 years; four children, William Jr., Gregory (Anita), David Sr. (Nadia), and Stephanie; three grandchildren David Jr., Brianna and Victoria; sister Sue; two nephews, Michael (Katrina, Michaela) and Alton (Palonia, Allison, Sara); one niece, Karen (Michael, Brandon, Olivia, Sophia), his Yorkshire Terrier Joy (JJ) and a host of family, colleagues and friends. He will be remembered for the love he shared as a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, mentor and grandfather (PaPa). Until we see you again, our love for you will remain forever in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 10am at St. Philip's the Apostle Catholic Church (7100 Stockdale Highway, Bakersfield)
