Dr. William L. Newman
Dr. William L. Newman Henderson, Ky. Dr. William L. Newman, 88, of Henderson, Ky., died Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at his home. He was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Henderson. Bill was a 1946 graduate of Hebbardsville High School, a 1950 graduate of Western Kentucky State College and a 1957 graduate of University of Louisville College of Dentistry. He opened his dentistry practice at 123 Letcher Street on August 28, 1957, and 45 years later retired at 325 Washington Street. Following retirement, he farmed for Cassius Bentley and pursued his passion of gardening until the day before he died. He loved sharing the bounty of his crop. Bill served as Henderson City Commissioner from 1966 to 1970, and Mayor of Henderson from 1970 to 1994. He also served on the boards of Methodist Hospital and the Hospital Foundation, the Henderson Economic Development Council, and the Green River Area Development District. He was past chair of the Kentucky League of Cities. Bill was a Korean War U.S. Army veteran and a member of Henderson Elks Lodge and Henderson Moose Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Virginia Nickenig Newman, who died January 11, 2004; and his parents, Herman Lee and Mary Edna Davis Newman. Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Barbara Helton Newman; three children, Leslie M. Newman and Virginia "Ginny" Sue Floyd and her husband, Nolan, and William Lee "Buzzy" Newman Jr., and his wife, Sindy, all of Henderson, Ky.; one sister, Joyce Johnston, of Jeffersonville, Ind.; six grandchildren, Davis Henry Newman, William Lee Newman III, Jarrod Wade Floyd, Elle Nicole Floyd, Tess Davis Floyd, and Molly Jane Floyd; one great-grandson, William Lee Newman IV; nieces and nephews; and Barbara's three children, Kriss White and his wife, Pam, Kelly White and his companion, Kelly Alvey, and Kim Hurt and her husband, Tom, and their families. Services will be at 11:12 a.m. (yes, 11:12 a.m.) Saturday at The Presbyterian Church of Henderson. Becky Durham and Mark Weaver will officiate. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery with full military rites performed by American Legion Worsham Post No. 40 and the Rt. Rev. Rich Martindale officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Pallbearers will be Nolan Floyd, Elle Floyd, Tess Floyd, Molly Floyd, Davis Newman, Lee Newman, Mike Farmer, Mark Mattingly and Dr. William Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Howard Campbell, Scott Davis, Carl Dempewolf, Ron Jenkins, Hascel Johnson, Billy Kurtz, Jiten Shah, Russell Sights, Kenneth Johnston, John Johnston and Paul Johnston.
