William Arnold Mahaffey, III William Arnold Mahaffey, III was born September 26, 1959 in Charleston, West Virginia. He moved with his parents to Monroe when he was 21 months of age. He attended Sallie Humble but moved to River Oaks School in the fourth grade. At River Oaks he played football, was an Honors' Student and a National Merit Scholar. Bill spent his senior year at Philips Exeter Academy where he played football, lacrosse and hockey. Bill attended Georgia Institute of Technology where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering as well as a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also played lacrosse for Georgia Tech. Bill moved to Huntsville, AL where he worked for NASA and the military in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics. He enjoyed playing cards, dining out with friends and watching his beloved GA Tech Yellow Jacket football team. He succumbed to cancer after a long and valiant fight on November 24, 2016. Bill is preceded in death by his parents William A "Bill" Mahaffey, II, and Jan Brown Mahaffey both of Monroe. Survivors include his brother, Todd and Mary Mahaffey and their son Todd, Jr of Alpharetta, GA, and his sister, Suzanne and Bobby Smith of Monroe, LA. Spry Funeral Home in Huntsville is handling arrangements. There will be a Memorial Service at The First Presbyterian Church of Huntsville, AL on Saturday January 14, 2017, and a private interment at a later date. The family wishes to express their grateful appreciation to the medical staff of Huntsville Hospital for their compassionate and diligent care.
