William "Bill" Kalan Aug. 10, 1918 – Feb. 13, 2017 Resident, Walnut Creek, CA William passed away peacefully in the evening of Monday, February 13th surrounded by his family. He was born August 10, 1918 to Benjamin and Rose Kaplan in Patchogue, Long Island, NY. He was raised in Spring Valley, NY. William joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and became a pilot. He flew B-24 bombers during WWII and was shot down over France shortly after D-Day and fought with the French Resistance, for which he was later awarded the French Legion of Honour. After the war, he married Lillian Frank Kalan, raised a family in New York and later Chicago, London (England), and Boston. He had a long and successful career in advertising with the Gillette Company and was also a gifted sculptor. He moved to California in 2007, and was a resident of Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, CA. He is survived by his son Jonathan Kalan and daughter-in-law Debra Kalan, son Barnaby Kalan and daughter-in-law Marilyn Hertz; grandchildren Jason Kalan, Marissa Gillette and husband Matt Gillette, and Abigail Kalan; and great-grandchildren Milo Gillette and Juliette Kalan; numerous cousins and many dear friends. He was loved and respected by all and will be greatly missed by those who knew him. Services will be held at the chapel at Gan Shalom Cemetery (1100 Bear Creek Road in Briones, CA), on Sunday, February 19th at 10:00 am, with an interment and military honors to follow. The family wishes to thank Vasiti Mataturaga and Vivian Soehngen for their loving and compassionate care over the past three years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in William's memory to Temple Isaiah in Lafayette, CA or to the Alzheimer's Association ( www.alz.org ).
