JOHANSEN, William Robert (Bill) of Athens, Georgia died October 1, 2016 at age 79 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his daughters Catherine Leigh Johansen of Atlanta, GA and Christine Ann Johansen Patrick of Taylors, South Carolina. He is also survived by son-in-law Samuel S. Patrick and grandchildren Phillip Michael Patrick and Heather Leigh Patrick, all of Taylors, SC; by former wife Margaret Johansen of Athens, GA; and by former wife Welynda Wright, also of Athens, GA. He is predeceased in death by his parents William Robert Johansen and Clarice Ann Johansen of Galesburg, Illinois and by sister Kay Ruch of Ann Arbor, Michigan. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Bill lived in Manchester England; Corpus Christi, TX; Kansas City, MO and resided for 46 years in Athens, Georgia prior to his passing. He attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, and earned his Bachelors in Fine Arts degree at the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City. He also attended and taught at Michigan State University where he earned an MFA in Specialized Studies. During his career, Bill served as assistant to the Head of Collections of the Nelson Art Gallery in Kansas City, as an Instructor of Art at William Jewel College, and started the first Graduating Art Department at William Jewell College. In 1970, Bill brought his multiplicity of talents to the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia in Athens, joining as an Associate Professor of Painting & Drawing. He later became a full Professor of Art at the University of Georgia. He retired in 2000. A dedicated artist and teacher, Bill's work and love of his students was a role he embraced. Over his nearly eight decades, he garnered many friends and leaves the best of memories among all those who were blessed to know him. He was a compassionate and quick-witted friend and colleague. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to their favorite charity to support cancer victims or research.
