William Bolton
BOLTON, William Donald William Donald Bolton (Bill) passed away peacefully on October 5, 2016 at the age of 77 , following a relentless battle against squamous cell carcinoma. Born in Huntington Park, CA on June 12, 1939, to Dorance and Helen Bolton, he was raised in San Marino, CA, and was a member of the second graduating class at San Marino High School in 1957. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, joined Psi Upsilon Fraternity and graduated with a degree from the Haas School of Business. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Bill and his first wife, the late Mary Susan Powell, raised their two children in San Marino, where he was active in youth and CIF sports and civic organizations. Bill began his insurance career in 1961. In 1970, he and his brother Jim took over Bolton and Company Insurance Brokers from their father, growing it upon their retirement to the 84th largest insurance brokerage firm in the United States. Bill was a respected leader in the insurance industry and authored more than thirty articles on industry practice. He served as President of the Western Association of Insurance Brokers, California Insurance Commissioner's Fair Practices Commission, Board of Directors of the Western Compensation Insurance Company, and the Professional Agents Reinsurance Board of Directors. In 1986, he was elected Chairman of Assurex International, an association of the largest privately owned agencies in the world. He received IBA West's highest honor in 1999, the Ramsden Sullivan Memorial Award, for his extraordinary representation of the agency system and insurance industry, outstanding service to IBA West and the community, and work to improve the image of insurance brokers and independent agents. In 1991, Bill married the love of his life, Linda Britton, and moved to Pasadena. They made their second home in Hayden Lake, Idaho, where they enjoyed boating, playing golf, entertaining and hosting their eight grandchildren, who adoringly called him "Bumpie." He was a long time member of The Valley Club, Annandale Golf Club and Hayden Lake Country Club. On January 26, 2011, he received the ultimate gift of life—a bilateral lung transplant. Bill was predeceased by his father Dorance and brother Bob. Survivors include his devoted wife Linda, mother Helen of Pasadena, brother James (Joan) of Pasadena, children Lisa Singelyn (Mike) of Lucas, TX, Patrick (Renee) of Cave Creek, AZ, stepson Michael Britton (Jessica) of Simi Valley, and grandchildren Michael, Matthew and Ashlyn Singelyn, Lauren and Luke Bolton and Miranda, Steven and Nicholas Britton.
