ARLINGTON HEIGHTS - Walter Shorten, 84, passed away peacefully at home on October 1, 2016, surrounded by family. Walter retired from the post office 14 years ago and spent his time in retirement traveling with his wife Carol, enjoying time with their three kids and seven grandchildren, and watching the Cubs, Bulls and the Bears. Walter's family and friends enjoyed his great sense of humor. He is survived by his loving wife Carol; children Michael (Cheryl) Shorten, Laurie (Eric) Baumgart, Patrick (Diane Burke) Shorten, Erin Stanley and Brian Shorten; and grandchildren Tessa, Jillian and Delanie Shorten; Tyler and Brenden Baumgart; and Hattie and Walter Shorten, who will all miss him immensely. He was preceded in death by his father James Shorten, mother Mary Shorten, brother James Shorten and sister Joan Wright. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 16th at Willow Creek Church, 220 Exchange Dr., Unit A, in Crystal Lake, IL. Walter, who served as a Marine and was a Purple Heart recipient in the Korean War, will be given full military honors. Interment will be at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL on Monday, October 17th.
