Wallace Irving Benson COLUMBIA - A private burial for Wallace Irving Benson, 83, will be held Wednesday, October 19, 2016 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Following the burial, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church (Smith Chapel, 1420 Washington Street). The family will receive friends following the service in the church atrium. Reverend L. Craig Wilkes will be officiating the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Wallace passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2016. He was a husband, father, grandfather, a lifelong South Carolinian, a native of Manning, and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Following basic training at Lackland AFB in Alabama, Wallace held rank as Staff Sergeant (1950 - 1954), serving in England. He studied at Presbyterian College, and he worked for Commercial Credit for forty-three years. He was married to the former Joan Clay, a nurse from North Carolina for fifty-four years. They had two children, Wallace Irving Jr. (Sarah) of Columbia and Cynthia Leigh (Matthew) McEver, as well as two grandchildren, Jonah Matthew McEver and Rachel Elisabeth McEver residing in Gainesville, Georgia. Wallace married Peggy Seastrunk Wingate in 2015. They spent time together laughing, cooking, drinking coffee, and enjoying each other's company. Wallace was also a Carolina Gamecock, a supporter of USC football, baseball, and basketball, a fisherman who loved seafood and listening to music, enjoyed World War II movies, kept a large vegetable garden and inherited his mother's talents in the kitchen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Grace Benson; brothers, Lawrence and Robert; and his sister, JoAnn Coskrey; as well as his first wife, Joan.
