In memory of
Virginia S. SHERRELL
SHERRELL, Virginia S. Formerly of Oxford, passed away on February 4, 2017, at Kendal-Crosslands, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. She was born Virginia Ruth Stark in Natchitoches, Louisiana, on September 5, 1927, to Orton K. and Mary Milligan Stark, and she grew up in Oxford, Ohio. In 1953, she married Richard E. Sherrell, who survives her. She is also survived by her three sons Tom, Rob and John and their families. Virginia had a life-long passion for service and social justice. Following her graduation from Oberlin College, she taught English in rural China for a year in 1949, before the Revolution forced her to leave. She earned a Masters in Linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Throughout her life in Massachusetts, California, New Jersey and Wisconsin, she was active in social causes such as Fair Housing and the League of Women Voters. She was also active in providing support for immigrant communities from China and Southeast Asia, teaching English as a Second Language to new Americans and teaching writing skills to inmates in local prisons. Following her wishes, there will be a private family gathering to celebrate her life. Donations in her memory may be made to the Hmong Center of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Address: 401 9th St, Green Bay, WI 54304
