Virinia Mattax, 92, Berne, passed away April 16, 2017, at Swiss Village where she was a resident. She was born Aug. 2, 1924, to the late Elmer and Ida (Kauffman) Flueckiger. She married Laurel Mattax March 12, 1944, and lived on the Mattax Homestead all of their married life. Homestead preceded her in death in 2002 and she stayed on the farm until she moved to Swiss Village in 2013. She was a helper to Laurel on the farm and loved to garden. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing for her family and church friends, quilting and reading. Virginia played the piano and organ for many years at the Springhill Church where she also taught Sunday School. Among survivors are four daughters, Saundra (Keith) Minger of Berne, Rita (John) Carroll of Decatur, Linda (Keith) Keller of Berne and Susan (Tony) Braun of Berne; two brothers, Howard (Eleanor) and William Flueckiger, both of Berne; sister, Shirley (Bill) Emshwiller of Cottonwood, Ariz.; and 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Valier; and great-granddaugher, Claire Fordham. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Swiss Village Auditorium. Officiating are Pastors William Hull and Joe Nass. Burial is in the Springhill Cemetery, rural Berne. Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to services Thursday, also at Swiss Village.
