Virginia F. Burkard
Virginia F. Burkard, 99, of Middlebury, Vermont, formerly of West Harwich, Weston, and Newton, Mass., passed away peacefully on September 29, 2016, three days into her 100th year. Virginia was born in Newton, Mass., on September 26, 1917, the cherished daughter of Frank I. Fisher and Helen (Mullins). She was predeceased by her loving husband, Lawrence H. Burkard, and her brother, Frank I. Fisher, Jr. She is survived by three daughters: Joan Fleischer (Jack) of Leicester, Mass., Alicia Pierce (Fran Varville) of Worcester, Mass., and Cari Burkard (Brad Leathers) of Rochester, Vt., formerly of Harwich Port, Mass.; six grandchildren: Laurie Rozell, Kelly Chippas (John DiIorio), Jeff Fleischer (Christina), Greg Fleischer (Nicole), Graham Leathers, and Abigail Leathers; ten great-grandchildren; a cousin, Marilyn Wales; a niece, Suzanne Canney; and a family friend, William Markot. Virginia graduated from Regis College, Weston, Mass., with a Bachelor of Science in Business, in 1939. She was on the Board of the Friends of the Brooks Free Library for years, and was a former member of the Guild of Harwich Artists. The family will receive friends Friday, October 21, 2016, from 5-8 pm, in Westwood, Mass., at a location to be determined. There will be a memorial service at the Regis College Chapel, Weston, Mass., Saturday, October 22, 2016, at 10 am. There will also be a memorial service at the Federated Church, Rochester, Vt., Saturday, November 5, 2016, at 11:00 am, with a reception to follow. Burial at Calvary Cemetery in Waltham, Mass., will be held at the convenience of the family. The family is making all arrangements. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Virginias memory may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation ( www.macular.org ) or the Sister Jeanne dArc OHare Merit Scholarship Fund at Regis College ( www.regiscollege.edu ).
