Virgil V. Cranford PEORIA - Virgil V. Cranford, age 86, of Peoria Heights passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017, at UnityPoint Health-Proctor. Virgil was born on January 9, 1931, in Peoria, IL, a son of Austin and Mary (Moran) Cranford. He married Shirley (Klockenga) and they celebrated 60 years together before her passing in 2016. Virgil was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, George, Austin and David. Virgil is survived by six children, Danny (Suzanne) of Peoria Heights, Scott (Bev) of Norwood, Mark (Connie) of East Peoria, Mary (Kevin) Scott of Edelstein, Bill (Jill) of Ottawa and Gary of Peoria Heights; nine grandchildren, Ashley, Kristen, Allison, Kaleigh, Jeffrey, Alexi, Kelly, Michelle and Eric; three great-grandchildren, Eliza, Lucas and Jaxon; two brothers, Arthur (Lois) Cranford and Robert (Linda) Cranford; and one sister, Mary Ellen Colvin. Virgil proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy. He often shared stories of his time and duties while stationed in England and also his time spent on the USS Coral Sea, sailing in the Mediterranean. After being honorably discharged from the service, he held many jobs in the Peoria area to support his growing family. He later started working for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier, retiring after 32 years of service. In his younger days, Virgil loved to duck hunt, bowl, play softball and go mushroom hunting. He was an avid sports fan and loved all sports, especially golf and his beloved St. Louis Cardinals. He loved being outside and enjoyed working in his yard and took great pride in meticulously tending his lawn and vegetable garden. Virgil was most proud of his family. He and his sweet smile will be missed by all those who knew and loved him. The family would like to thank the staff at UnityPoint Health-Proctor, especially Brandon, Maggie, Dan and Megan for their professionalism and excellent care they gave our dad. Private graveside service with military honors will be held at Springdale Cemetery in Peoria. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials in Virgil's name to Peoria Heights District 325, 500 E.
