In memory of
Violet Marie Sutton
Violet Marie Sutton, 82, of Barry, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 10, 2017, at Eastside HRC, Pittsfield. She was born May 12, 1934, in Morgan County, a daughter of Omer and Ina Reed McDannald. She grew up in Beverly and graduated from Liberty High School in 1952. Violet married Lyndell D. Sutton on May 12, 1955, in Barry, where they made their home together. Violet and Lyndell shared their May 12th birthdays with Lyndell's twin sister Bertha, and they also married on May 12. Many wonderful celebrations happened on this day over the years. As a young woman, Violet moved to Dallas with her best friend Marge and worked as a waitress at the Mayflower Restaurant. While employed there, she waited on the infamous Jack Ruby many times. After returning to Barry and marrying Lyndell, she worked at the Wells-Lamont Glove factory in Barry for several years and also helped in the fall with the apples at Keoller Orchards. Violet enjoyed waitressing very much, working at the Barry Café and Cardinal Inn in Pittsfield for many years. Violet was a member of the Pike County Cancer Support Group, Barry Auxiliary Police and Barry American Legion Auxiliary. She seldom missed marching in the Memorial Day parades or helping at the Barry Fire Department's annual chicken fry. She was a room mother and later a volunteer at Barry Grade School. Violet also participated in Pike County Youth Court for a number of years. Violet and Lyndell were instrumental in the beginnings of the Barry Apple Festival and worked tirelessly to make each year's festival a success. She was honored in 2004 by receiving the Barry Golden Apple Award. Violet was a longtime member of the Barry Church of Christ and also attended the Barry Nazarene Church. She enjoyed her grandkids and great-grandkids very much. Violet liked old-time country music, volunteering and socializing with many people. She was an accomplished seamstress, making many clothes over the years for her kids and grandkids. Survivors include a daughter, Patti (Rusty) Ruble of Pittsfield; a son, Rodger (Pam) Sutton, of Griggsville; a brother, Bob (Barb) McDannald of Meredosia; a sister-in-law Pearlie McDannald of Concord; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Lyndell in 1992; a son Randy Sutton in 1998; a great-grandson Tristan Brady Sutton; a brother Gene McDannald; a sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Virgil McDonald; and her parents.
