Vernon Miles McAllister, 91, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017. He leaves his wife of 68 years, Thelma McDonald McAllister; son, Steven McAllister (deceased); daughter, Susan (McAllister) Kasper; son, Scott McAllister; eight grandchildren; three great- grandchildren. Vernon was born in Bolckow, Mo., son of Charles and Bonnie (Hopper) McAllister. He joined the U.S. Navy on June 29, 1944, during World War II and was honorably discharged, as a yeoman second class on June 11, 1946. He met his wife, Thelma McDonald in 1946, while home on leave during his time in the Navy. It was love at first sight. They were married Aug. 29, 1948, at the Christian Church in Rosendale, Mo., on the hottest day of the year. After serving in the Navy, he attended Washington University in St. Louis, graduating in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. In his early years, Vernon worked for A.S. Aloe, as an accountant, and later for the St. Louis Zoo as deputy director of Finance until he retired in December 1989 to travel the United States with Thelma. They've resided near their family in Fort Worth for the past 18 years.
