Verl J. Boyer
Verl Jay Boyer, 90, of North Huntingdon, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at his home. He was born Nov. 10, 1926, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Wilbur and Lillian (Hebenthal) Boyer. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 32 years for the A&P Tea Company, Pittsburgh, and was a machinist for Robert Shaw Controls of New Stanton. He was a long time member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, in Irwin, where he served on the Church Council and the Church Executive Board. He was a veteran of the Army, serving during World War II. Verl was a proud member of the First Army Field Band from 1944 to 1946, in Washington D.C. He was a member of the VFW 781 of Irwin, where he served as president of the Home Association and was past Quarter Master, he was also a member of the Manor American Legion. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters, Evelyn Warrick, Sara Daphane Davis, Florence Minerd and Esther Gribble. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Doris I. "Dodie" (Berndt) Boyer; two sons, David J. Boyer and his wife, Linda, of Lancaster, and Jeffrey Boyer and his wife, Rhonda, of Kittrell, N.C.; two grandchildren, Jay Boyer and Brittney Elmore and her husband, Bobby; and two great-grandchildren, Blaire and Brett Elmore. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the OTT FUNERAL HOME INC., 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity with the Rev. Dr. Clifton Suehr, his pastor, officiating.
