SCOTT-BYRD, MRS. VELTON DELORIS Age 63, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Alive Hospice of Nashville, TN. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Greater Galilee Baptist Church, 4418 Industrial Ave. with funeral commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Andre Williams officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery G-4415 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at church 10:00 AM Saturday. Mrs. Byrd will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM Friday, with family present from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. to receive friends.Mrs. Velton Deloris (Scott) Byrd was born January 26, 1953, in Lexa, Arkansas. She was the oldest of 6 children born to the union of James and Myrtle (McClinton) Scott. Velton graduated from Flint Central High School in 1971. She started her nursing studies at Michigan State University and completed her Nursing degree at Mott Community College. In 1978, Velton began her career at Hurley Medical Center as a Registered Nurse working in the Pre-Admission Testing Department and later advancing as Assistant Head Nurse. She transferred to Same Day Surgery where she remained until she retired in 2008. On May 17, 2008, Velton married the love of her life, Isiah Byrd, and shortly thereafter relocated to Tennessee. Velton accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and in 1989 became a member of Great Galilee Baptist Church. Upon moving to Tennessee Velton joined Connection Hill Primitive Baptist Church where she actively participated in the choir. Velton was known for her unique culinary skills, adding a "special touch" to each dish and enjoyed sharing them with her family and friends. Velton had a vibrant personality never meeting a stranger along the way. She had a contagious laugh and a smile that would light up a room. Throughout Velton's years of battling cancer she maintained a positive attitude and an unwavering faith in God. This resulted in her being declared a "medical miracle" however she always recognized that it was because of her faith. No matter how many times she had to undergo an additional procedure or surgery, she always kept a smile and would even joke about how it would not get the best of her. Velton leaves to cherish her memory: husband, Isiah Byrd; one son, Alfonso (Tamara) Byrd of Columbus, OH; two brothers, Melvin Scott of Flint, MI and Leland (Lori) Scott of Twinsburg, OH; one sister, Delmaria Scott of Warren, MI; seven grandchildren, Kayla Byrd, Corbin Byrd, Kendyl Byrd, Almari Byrd, Elijah Byrd, Exzier Byrd and Shianna Byrd; sisters-in law, Renee (Bertram) Hampton of Vandalia, OH, Phyllis Scott of Lansing, MI, Martha Jackson of Uvalda, GA, Angie Blade of Columbus, OH, Janice Becoat of Flint, MI; brothers-in-law, Herman (Barbara) Byrd of Flint, MI, William Byrd of Jacksonville, FL and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends including, special aunts, Willie Mae McClinton and Lillie Mae Coley. Mrs. Byrd was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Felix and Kelvin Scott. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hurley Medical Center and Vanderbilt Hospital.
