Thomas "Tommy" Jarrett 1926—2016 Thomas "Tommy" Jarrett, 90, of Rockford, IL, departed this earthly life on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at The Villa at PA Peterson, after a short illness. Tommy was born January 19, 1926, in East St. Louis, IL, son of Mose and Jennie Lou (Cross) Jarrett. He lived in Rockford 73 years, coming from Grand Junction, Tennessee in Hardeman County. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1945, becoming Staff Sergeant Thomas Jarrett of the 761st Tank Unit, Tank Operations Specialist and Training Officer in connection with the famed Tuskegee Airmen of Tuskegee, Alabama. Staff Sergeant Jarrett completed tours of France, Germany, Northern Africa and Japan under the command of General George Patton. He was employed as a crane operator for Greenlee Bros. Tool & Die Company for 40 years and served as a Deputy Sheriff of Winnebago County Sheriff's Department for 20 years, becoming one of the first African American Deputy Sheriff of Winnebago County, along with John Williams, Homer Moore, and John Singletary. He retired in 1980. He was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church where he sang in the Bethel Male Chorus for 69 years. Thomas leaves behind to cherish many loving memories one son, Thomas Williams; four daughters, Evangelist Deborah (Hal) Jarrett-Iverson of Atlanta, GA, Toni Jarrett of Fayetteville, GA, Jennifer Kahsai of Houston, TX and Felissa Williams of Rockford, IL; one brother, Robert Jarrett of Rockford, IL; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including special cousins, Jessie "Joe" Jones and Edward "Junior" Hunt, Jr.; and special friend, Ruby Jean Wiley. He was predeceased by parents; brother, Paul Jarrett; sisters, Emma Lee Powell, Annie Mae Hunt and Louise Hunt-Louis; and grandson, Debrent Lindell Jarrett. Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 21, 2016, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 724 Harrison Avenue, Rockford, IL. Burial in Cedar Bluff Cemetery.
