THOMAS GORDON HAGERTY
HAGERTY THOMAS GORDON HAGERTY (Age 65) Died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, October 16, 2016, at home with his family in Front Royal, Virginia. Mr. Hagerty had been a resident of Chevy Chase, Maryland for 40 years, until his recent illness. He died of a brain tumor. Tom was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 2, 1950. He was the son of the late Ruth Gallaway Hagerty of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and the late Fred D. Hagerty, MD of York, Pennsylvania. Tom is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 33 years, Patricia Thursland Hagerty; his daughter, Elizabeth Gallaway Hagerty of the District of Columbia; and his son, Matthew Thursland Hagerty, of Front Royal, Virginia. He is also survived by two sisters, Linda L. Hagerty of Oakland, California, and Deborah H. Ibsen of Burlington, Vermont; two aunts, Dorothy J. Hagerty of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and Carol G. Paradis of Brooklyn, New York; six sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law, and 10 nieces and nephews. Tom is also survived by his step-mother Ann Hagerty Perry of Lititz, Pennsylvania; step- brother William Eyster of Dover, Pennsylvania; and step-sister Katherine Szala of York, Pennsylvania. Tom received a B.S. from Bucknell University in 1972 and a J.D. from Washington College of Law, American University in 1978. He was a member of the bar in both Maryland and the District of Columbia. Tom was a principal in the law firm of Semmes, Bowen and Semmes and was the past managing partner of the Washington, D.C. office. His litigation practice specialized in workers' compensation and personal injury defense as well as government employee disability retirement fund defense. He was a member and past president of both the Association of Compensation Insurance Attorneys and the District of Columbia, Defense Lawyers Association. He was also a member of the Defense Research Institute. In lieu of flowers, donations be made in Tom's name to one of the following organizations: The National Brain Tumor Society, Bucknell University, Montgomery County Maryland Humane Society, or Blue Ridge Hospice of Winchester, Virginia. Family and friends may call at Joseph Gawler's Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Avenue NW (corner of Harrison Street) Washington, DC (Valet Parking) on Saturday, October 22, 2016 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Following the visitation, a service to celebrate Tom's life will be held in the Joseph E.
