Thomas Cole Ashcraft Memphis, tn Thomas Cole Ashcraft, 79, of Huntsville, AL, passed away at his home on January 5, 2017. Born in Sheridan, AR April 25, 1937, Mr. Ashcraft was the son of Ottis Cole Ashcraft and Della Cleamens Veazey Ashcraft. Mr. Ashcraft graduated from Little Rock Central High School and from Memphis State University (now The University of Memphis), with a bachelor's degree in music and a master's degree in education. While at Memphis State, he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the Liberal Arts Honor Society. He was also First Vice President of the Student Body. Mr. Ashcraft spent his life in the music ministry. He served Mullins Methodist Church and Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis; Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montgomery, AL; Covenant Presbyterian Church in Nashville; and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Huntsville. He was passionate about choral music and even more devoted to helping others understand the importance of giving to God the glory due His name in all areas of life, especially worship. Mr. Ashcraft studied voice with Jerome Robertson and choral conducting with Robert Shaw. Mr. Ashcraft sang leading roles with the Memphis State Opera Theater and Opera Memphis, including Tosca, Rigoletto, Eugene Onegin, Barber of Seville, Carmen, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Pagliacci, Lucia di Lammermoor, La Boheme, Hansel and Gretel, Cosi Fan Tutti, Faust, and Tannhauser. Mr. Ashcraft was also the founder and former director of The Memphis Boy Choir. Mr. Ashcraft is survived by his wife of 57 years, Emily Wofford Ashcraft. He also leaves two daughters, Alicia Ashcraft Bartusch (Dr. Scott Linton Bartusch) of Memphis and Stefanie Ashcraft Miles (Scott Gannon Miles) of Huntsville. He was so proud of his three grandchildren, Lee Gannon Miles, Thomas Cole Ashcraft Miles, and Ann Alicia Miles. The family will hold a private burial service on Tuesday, January 10, 2017. Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 pm at Independent Presbyterian Church, 4738 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis, TN, with the memorial service immediately following at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Organ Fund at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 5744 Oakwood Road NW, Huntsville, AL 35806.
