Thomas O. Alter
Thomas (Tom ) O. Alter, longtime resident of Boca Raton, FL, then Dunnellon, FL, passed away suddenly December 24, 2016. He was 84 years of age. Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Carolyn R. Alter and his 5 children: Debbi Alter Moore of Ocala, FL, Dr. Dennis Alter of Flagler Beach, FL, Sue Alter of Boca Raton, FL and Sag Harbor, NY, Kathy Alter Straub of Charlotte, NC and Rick Alter of Boca Raton, FL. Mr. Alter was blessed with fourteen grandchildren: Sean Moore, Ryan Moore and Erin Moore Colucci. Jonathan Alter, Larissa Alter, Taylor Alter Duffy, Tessa Alter Earle and Joseph Alter. Jason Straub, Adam Straub and David Straub. Loralee Alter, Kelly Alter and Heather Alter. And 8 great-grandchildren. During his lifetime he was known for his great love and devotion to his family, his faith and his country. He loved to travel with his wife and many times included his children and grandchildren. From Europe to the Orient, Canada to South America, Africa to Mexica, the world opened to him its gifts, at the same time deepening his appreciation of the United States. Born in Ft. Wayne, IN, he attended Catholic elementary school, Central Catholic High school, and Norte Dame University until he joined the Navy during the Korean War. Following his Naval service, he graduated from St. Joseph's College, Rensselaer, IN Magna Cum Laude. During his successful business career, he was a Life Member of The Million Dollar Round Table and earned the professional designations: Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC). In 1964, he founded one of the 1st financial planning companies in Florida. He retired in 1994 as the President of Lincoln National Financial Services. He helped founded the St. Joan of Arc Home & School Organization and served as its President, while taking the school from 'no air conditioning to air conditioning'. He was St. Joan's volunteer basketball coach during their championship years, winning 7 League Titles and 3 South Florida championships. In 1994, Mr. and Mrs. Alter retired full-time to Dunnellon, FL and became members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He joined with others to protect the beauty and quality of water of the Rainbow River. He wrote a fascinating book about his life, what he had learned, had it published and made sure his grandchildren read the lessons it contained. He loved his sports; playing, reading and of course, watching basketball and football. He was always available for financial or other advice to his myriad of relatives and friends. He was truly a great man and will be sorely missed. Although he supported many causes and Ministries, one dear to his heart is Sister Immaculata's Peru ""Ministry of The Good Shephard"", where 100% of donations is put to good works in Peru.
