Sylvia Koling Mills Chapel Hill, NC - May 25, 1919 - December 25, 2016 Sylvia Mills passed away peacefully at her home in Chapel Hill NC on December 25, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was an only child born in New York City to Hyman and Rose Koling, and grew up in the Bronx. She graduated high school at the age of 15 and Hunter College at age 19 with a degree in chemistry. But her true passion was music, be it symphony, opera, or ballet. Shortly after graduation, she met and married her adored husband of 65 years, Larry Mills, who predeceased her on August 27, 2006. In 1952, Sylvia and Larry moved to Asheville, NC where Larry and his brother Ernest Mills started Mills Manufacturing. There Sylvia lovingly raised her three children and had many dear friends in the community. She never lost her passion for music and passed the gift of this appreciation to her children. When Larry retired, they left Asheville for Florida, but never lost touch with many of their Asheville friends. During retirement, they travelled all over the world, particularly enjoying experiencing the customs and foods of other cultures. In 2004 they moved to Chapel Hill to be closer to family. Sylvia is survived by her three children Floyd Mills of Boulder CO, Steven Mills (Kay) of Raleigh, and Joanne Garrett (Peter) of Chapel Hill. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Moss Mills (Hae) of Los Angeles, Michael Mills (Jennie) and Emily Reed (Adam) of Chapel Hill, Peter Mills (Sara) of Weaverville, and Daniel (Kinsey), Rosalina, and Harry Mills of Boulder. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Nancy, Frances, Llewyn, and Sylvia. Burial is in the family cemetery in New York. There will be a celebration of her life at a yet to be announced time in Chapel Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sylvia's name to the Carolina Ballet ( www.carolinaballet.com ) or the North Carolina Symphony (www.ncsympho ny.org ).
