Susan Ellis DeLong, aged 67, passed away in Santa Barbara on April 11, 2017 following an extended period of debilitating physical ailments. Despite contracting polio at age 2, she refused to permit the residual effects to interfere with living a full, highly productive and unique life. Born the first of three siblings in Cincinnati, Ohio, Susan was the daughter of a career naval officer and moved often throughout her childhood as her father was assigned to different duty stations. She graduated from Ohio University with a B.A. in sociology. Susan established residency in Santa Barbara in 1977 where she eventually met and married James (J.D.) DeLong, her devoted husband of 25 years. Susan began her career as a receptionist with an accounting firm where her exceptional talents were soon recognized and she was rapidly promoted to increasingly responsible positions. She soon branched out to establish her own successful private tax practice where she provided expert services to her many clients for over 25 years. Susan's love of the sea culminated in her overcoming considerable physical challenges to earn certification as a licensed Merchant Marine Officer from the U.S. Coast Guard. She was predeceased by her father, Admiral (retired) William H. Ellis. She is survived by her husband J.D. And her mother Irene of Santa Barbara as well as a brother Bill of North Carolina and a sister Cindy of Florida. Private services and burial at sea to follow.
