Sue May North Carolina - Mrs. Sue Brickhouse May, 94, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2017. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11am in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Winterville Cemetery. Mrs. May was born on October 23, 1922 in Columbia, NC and was a longtime resident of Winterville. She was a graduate of Women's College in Greensboro and taught school in Tyrrell County. She later became a Home Extension Agent with the NC Agricultural Extension Service in Lenoir and Pitt counties. She was instrumental in organizing the first Home Builders Expo in Pitt County. In 1963, she received the National Home Demonstration Agency Award for distinguished service and also was named Tarheel of the Week. Mrs. May was a charter member of Friends in Fellowship Christian Church and had been an active member and elder of Winterville Christian Church. She was active in her book club, and was a member of the Eastern Star and Gideon's Auxiliary. Sue and Milton enjoyed traveling, especially on cruise ships, seeing much of the world that way. Avid North Carolina State fans, they strongly supported education and endowed several scholarships at Barton College and North Carolina State University. A loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Sue had an intelligent mind and great sense of humor. True to her spirit to the end, she waged a steadfast battle with Alzheimer's. She was well known and respected throughout the county and state for her contributions to the community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Erskine and Sue Brickhouse; husband of 61 years, J. Milton May; and a daughter, Sue Credle May. She is survived by her: son, John M. May Jr. and wife, Dr. Jeannie Meece May, of Wilmington; granddaughters, Rev. Maggie Sue May Archibald and husband, Matt, of Indianapolis, and Beth Marie May, of Maryland; and great-grandson, Daniel Archibald. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 8 pm at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
