Chen, Su-Chin 96 Feb. 20, 1920 Oct. 05, 2016 Su-Chin Chen, 97, of Clackamas, passed away peacefully on Oct. 5, 2016. She was born in Nanjing, China on Feb. 20, 1920. During the Japanese occupation of China amidst World War Two, she stopped her studies to work at the American Red Cross, dutifully helping her country during the war effort. As part of China's Hui Islamic community, Su-Chin was a faithful and practicing Muslim. She was married to Pin Zan Chen, an officer for the Kuomintang Nationalist Party, also a Chinese Muslim. In 1949, they fled to Taipei, Taiwan to escape communism. She worked briefly as a kindergarten teacher before raising their seven children. Due to China's period of strict communism, it would be more than 30 years until she was able to contact or see her family again. Su-Chin moved to Gladstone during the early 1980's, where she proudly helped to raise her numerous grandchildren. Su-Chin was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. She will forever be remembered for the tremendous sacrifices and contributions she made for her family, and the lessons she taught us about the virtues of hard work and kindness to others. She is survived by her children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Her memorial services were held on Oct. 7, 2015 at The Islamic Center of Portland and Lincoln Memorial Park.
