Stephen P. Hanson
Stephen Paul Hanson was born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, on March 18, 1954. He passed unexpectedly on Sept. 4, 2016, at his home in Prescott, Ariz. Stephen's father, Donald Hanson, was in the U.S. Navy stationed in Northern Ireland. His mom, Kathleen Casey, and dad married there. Stephen moved to the United States and joined the U.S. Air Force where he served his country for more than 10 years. He made a career as a computer programmer and finally joined the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Service in August 1995 and retired in December 2012, after 17 years. Stephen had many hobbies including hiking, backpacking and camping in the Alaska outdoors. He also enjoyed traveling, including trips to Australia, Ireland and Europe, and favorite destinations in Hawaii and New Zealand. Stephen was a Superfan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had an eclectic taste in all music from the '60s, '70s and '80s. He enjoyed playing the bass guitar, which was part of his teenage and early 20s, playing in a rock and roll band named "Catweazle." He was also an avid reader. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Kathleen Hanson. He is survived in life by significant other, Hedy Towne; his four children, Jessica, Matthew, Sarah and Kayleigh Hanson; the mother of his children, Donna; his brother, Sean; and sister, Lesley. In his later, years Stephen enjoyed living part of the year in Arizona and returning to Alaska for its beautiful summers, but he would always call Alaska his home. He is beloved by his younger siblings for being a compassionate big brother that helped raise them. Stephen was cremated and his ashes will be spread over the globe in some of his favorite locations.
