SOUTH HADLEY – Shirley J. (Opalenik) Gingras, 73, passed away on Oct. 15, 2016. Born Jan. 7, 1943 in Holyoke, she was the daughter of Michael and Shirley (Bullough) Opalenik. Shirley was a lifelong resident of South Hadley and was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church. She worked most recently for C & G Machine Shop, where she was an office manager. In her leisure, Shirley enjoyed skiing and golfing. She loved anything water related, whether it was boating, water skiing or time at the beach, ocean or lake. She is remembered fondly for many things, but her greatest passion and devotion was her family. Shirley will be dearly missed by her husband of 52 years, Omer A. Gingras, along with her children, Cherie Fitzsimmons and her husband Daniel of Monroe, Connecticut; Omer Gingras and his wife Shelley of South Hadley; and Toby Felts and her late husband Matthew of Uxbridge. She also leaves her dear grandchildren, Eric, Evelyn and Elise Gingras, and Nathan Felts as well as her siblings, Patricia Keyser, Michaele Palazzo, and Michael Opalenik and a large extended family.Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her sister, Judith Forest. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa's Church. Friends and family may gather at the funeral home between 10 to 10:15 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Alzheimer's Association.
