Shirley E. Garufi
Garufi, Shirley E. WATERVLIET Shirley E. Garufi, 86, formerly of Albany, died Monday, October 17, 2016, at Albany Memorial Hospital. Born in Troy on October 24, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Ethel Jallon of Watervliet. Shirley was a 1947 graduate of Watervliet High School where she was a cheerleader. She was married on June 1, 1952, in St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet, to Salvatore J. Garufi of Albany. She was employed by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, the City of Albany Treasurer's Office and last by the Diocese of Albany. She was a member of the Sisters of Mercy Mother McCauley Guild and was a member of the Christian Brothers Academy Mother's Association. She enjoyed gardening and reading. She was predeceased by her late husband, Salvatore J. Garufi of Albany, former Albany County Legislator and Commissioner of Parks and Recreation for the City of Albany. She is survived by her two sons, Anthony T. Garufi of Guilderland, and Timothy J. Garufi of Colonie; her one grandson, Andrew Garufi of Niskayuna; and her longtime friend and companion, Edwin Kapela of Watervliet. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Her sons would like to thank the nursing staff in the E.R. and on the 4th floor at Memorial Hospital for their care and attention. The funeral will be Thursday at 8:30 a.m. from the Parker Bros. Memorial Funeral Home, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet, and at 9:30 a.m. at the Historic St. Mary's Church, Lodge & Pine Streets, Albany, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie.
