BECKEL, Shirley Gay 80, of Springfield, Ohio, passed away quietly Wednesday, October 12, 2016 after a long illness. She was surrounded by family at the time of her passing. Shirley was born February 28, 1936 in Locust Grove Ohio to Evelyn Ruth (Earles) Copeland Vorhees and Virgil "Bant" Copeland. She was a 1958 graduate of Enon High School and attended Sinclair Community College. Shirley loved the outdoors and nature, from fishing, hiking, wading in creeks, and gardening. She always complained that by the time her flowers were blooming and the trees she panted grew it was time to move. She was involved in many activities; an avid Bridge player and a member of Women's Town Club and GODA. Shirley was also a lifelong tennis player where she played at The Springfield Racket Club and Indian Valley Tennis Club. She was probably best known for her golf. Shirley was a member of OSWIGA where she traveled around with other ladies senior champions, playing in tournaments. She was the 1976 WBLY ladies Springfield city golf champion and 8 times ladies golf Champion of her beloved Springfield Country Club. Shirley will be remembered for her grace, elegance and dignity, but with the heart of a Tom-Boy athlete and a true competitive spirit. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Beckel and her brother, Ronald Copeland. She is survived by her sisters, Patricia Richards and Jennifer (Copeland) Williams; sons and spouses, Brian and Patricia (Lewis) Waters; Patrick and Hao (Cai) Beckel; daughters, Jamie Arthur and Brenda and Gary Gabbard; as well as her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren; a step-brother, Larry and Linda Roderick; and many cousins and dear friends. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Monday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday in St. Teresa Church with Rev. Fr. John MacQuarrie, Celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
