SHIRLEY ARMSTRONG DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA — Shirley Ann Armstrong, 88, a long time resident of Godfrey, Illinois, died Easter Sunday, April 16 at Duke Hospice Care, Durham, North Carolina. Shirley had been residing at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Tony Hall of Durham, North Carolina. She was born February 28, 1929, in Roodhouse, Illinois, to Paul Wade Ballard and Leta Wyatt Ballard. Shirley graduated in February 1950 from Springfield Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. The last 26 years of her nursing career she worked as a pediatric nurse with Dr. Nancy Voege. Shirley and Dr. Voege retired in 1987 and remained best friends. Preceeding her in death were her husband William D. Armstrong, a son Michael, brother, Daniel R. Ballard of Jacksonville, Illinois, a niece and best friend Shirley Bertram. She is survived by her daughter and husband Patricia and Tony Hall of Durham, two grandchildren and spouses, Joshua and Traci Hall of Durham, Amanda and Matt Lewis of Butner, North Carolina, three great- grandsons, Dylan and Dalton Hall (7 and 3) and William Duke Lewis (2); a brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Linda Ballard of Urbana, Illinois, and sister-in-law, Prudy Ballard of Jacksonville, Illinois; nephew and wife, Marlin and Dixie Dawdy. Also surviving are nephew, nieces and spouses, Rocky and Sandy Ballard of Jacksonville, Illinois, Robyn and Mike Halsey of Frederick, Colorado, Courtney and Brian McKay of Champaign, Illinois. Shirley so loved her great nieces and nephews, many cousins and her special friends. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Alton with many great friends in her Sunday school class. Also special to Shirley was Ferna Louden and family of Princeton, Kansas. Shirley loved taking care of her family and playing with her great-grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, reading, lots of shopping, and traveling. She and Bill enjoyed traveling together and took their grandchildren, Josh and Amanda, on many road trip adventures during their many extended summer months together. A memorial will be announced at a later date. Memorial gifts in her honor may be made to Duke Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Dr. Ste. 101, Durham, NC 27704 or St. Louis Childrens Hospital.
