Sherrie Ann (Smith) Detwiler Jan. 25, 1950 - Sept. 30, 2016 DECATUR, MI - Sherrie, formerly of Elkhart, passed away on Friday, September 30th, peacefully at home with her children by her side after an extended illness. She was born on January 25, 1950, in Paw Paw, Michigan, to Douglas and Marian Smith of Decatur, Michigan. Sherrie graduated from Decatur High School and Southwestern Michigan College. She was a Registered Nurse for 20 years, practicing in both Michigan and Indiana. Sherrie was preceded in death by her father, Douglas L. Smith of Decatur and her husband, Dennis W. Detwiler (aka Turtle to their Harley friends), both of whom she missed greatly. She is survived by her children Daniel Jason French of Dowagiac and Amy Elizabeth (French) Parsons of Cassopolis; her four grandchildren, Alianna Watkins, Emily and Lucas French and Jasper Parsons; her mother Marian Smith of Decatur; brothers Larry (Mandy) Smith of Maricopa, Arizona and Scott (Theresa) Smith of Decatur, and a nephew, Marc C. Smith of Arizona; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She will always be missed and loved by those she left behind. Sherrie was always full of life and had a great sense of humor. She enjoyed spending time with and spoiling her grandchildren; socializing with her friends; country living; collecting antiques; decorating her home and making it comfortable; and travelling - especially to the Florida Keys and later to the Black Hills of South Dakota on the back of her husband's Harley. Sherrie loved nature and the changing of the seasons. She bravely embraced Autumn and the season of change it brought her. Sherrie was an avid fan of Michigan State football and basketball. She loved her animal companions, Cisco, Coco, and Callie. She instilled in her children and grandchildren her lifelong love of music, reading, and learning. Friends and family are invited to share stories, laughter, and a bloody mary in Sherrie's memory Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 1p.m. at Zeke's banquet room in Dowagiac, MI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sherrie's memory to the Webster Memorial Library of Decatur, Michigan, or the Cass County Animal Shelter in Cassopolis, Michigan.
