Sarah Louise Simpson Allen Mrs. Sarah Louise Simpson Allen, 88, passed away Monday, October 10, 2016 at Cypress Glen Retirement Community after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. The funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at First Presbyterian Church prior to the service from 1 to 2 PM. Sarah was born on May 9, 1928 to Briggs Abel Simpson and Fannie Castelloe Simpson in Oakboro. She graduated valedictorian from Oakboro High School in 1945 and continued her education at Duke University, where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1949. At Duke, Sarah was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. After graduation, Sarah moved to Asheboro and began her teaching career. While in Asheboro, she met and later married Harry Alexander Allen, Jr. on August 12, 1950. They moved to Greenville in 1952, where she started teaching in Greenville City Schools. Harry and Sarah joined the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, where she served as Deacon, Elder, Sunday School pianist and teacher, youth leader and circle chairman, and remained an active member for over 50 years. She also served as a church outreach coordinator for the annual Disadvantaged Boys Camp and remained involved with the camp as long as she was physically able. She was a charter member of the PickWick Book Club as well as an active member and past president of her professional sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa. Later, Sarah continued her education at East Carolina University, earning master's degrees in 1975 in Elementary Education and in 1981 in Supervision. Sarah was awarded Greenville, Pitt County and Region 8 Teacher of the Year for the 1984/85 school year and was one of three finalists for the state of North Carolina. Sarah culminated her career as Assistant Principal for South Greenville Elementary from 1985 until her retirement in 1992. Sarah and Harry moved to Cypress Glen, a retirement community, in 2005, where she remained passionate about family, church, education, and helping those less fortunate. In addition to her parents and her sister, Frances Simpson Clontz, Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Alexander Allen, Jr. She is survived by her son, Harry Alexander Allen, III and wife, Mary, of Virginia Beach, VA; daughters, Mollie Allen Royal and husband, Randall, of Chesapeake, VA, and Jill Allen Crawford and husband, Barry, of Cary; and beloved grandchildren, Ashley Royal Whited and husband, Rob, Jack Randall Royal, Jr. and wife, Kelsey, Malcolm Lee Holmes, Sarah Kaitlyn Holmes, Alexander Joseph Allen and Claire Marie Allen.
