Cooper, Sanford "Sandy" Lee March 22, 1932 - Feb. 11, 2017 Sanford Lee Cooper, Jr., died February 11 at home in Sarasota, after a battle with cancer. Sandy is survived by his wife of 19 years Rena Henri Cooper; his sister Judith Beman of Silver Spring, MD; 5 children, 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Sandy had a rich life and engaged in new hobbies and pursuits, including golf, tennis, geology and astronomy throughout his life. He loved Gilbert & Sullivan, was a dedicated fly fisherman at the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana, and an expert in early American copper coinage. Flying was his life's passion. He owned and flew airplanes, including a twin Beech Baron, for 40 years, flying to all 50 states and accumulating 6300 hours of flying time. He was an avid bird watcher, with a life list of 655 species in the contiguous U.S., and 2000 species in 35 countries. Sandy volunteered at Oscar Scherer State Park, conducting the monthly census of the threatened Florida scrub jay. In later life he took up nature photography. His bird photographs were selected for publication in Florida environmental calendars. He wrote two books; one describing his birding "Big Year" of 1994, and a 2010 photographic essay of the birds of The Oaks Club. Born to Sanford Lee and Anna (Saylor) Cooper in 1932 in Detroit, married Lorraine Peterman of Washington, DC and had three children: Jeanne M. (Dr. Bryan) Allf of Gastonia NC.; David Sanford (Patty Draus) of Lexington, KY.; and Elizabeth L. (John "Quincy") Koenig of Cincinnati, OH. He married Marilyn Glenn Woods of Middletown, OH. They had two children: Sarah C. (Benjamin) Blemker of Cincinnati, OH., and Martha W. "Mimi" (David) Gerwin of Knoxville, TN. Marilyn died in 1996. In 1997 Sandy married Rena Henri of Ottawa, Ontario. He graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1950, and from Lafayette College in 1954, where he majored in chemistry. Sandy joined an R&D team at Procter & Gamble developing Crest Toothpaste and Head and Shoulders Shampoo. In 1963 Sandy joined Burke Marketing Research, one of the largest custom survey research companies in America. Sandy rose to President/CEO. In 1980 Sandy formed Cooper Research, Inc., specializing in health care survey research. He retired to Florida in 1997. Sandy was a member of The Camargo Club of Cincinnati and The Oaks Club of Sarasota, serving on the Oaks Board of Governors and as President 2005-2006. He was deeply loved and respected. Sandy's Life Celebration will be Friday February 17 from 11 – 1 pm at Sandhill Preserve Clubhouse, 11140 Sandhill Preserve Dr. (Honore at Central Sarasota Parkway), Sarasota.
