Sandra M. Rushing
Sandra M. Rushing The Rev. Sandra M. Rushing died at her home here in Rockbridge County on Sunday, April 2, 2017. She was able to die at home through the excellent service and devotion of Rockbridge Area Hospice. Born in 1941 at the family farm, she was the daughter of O.M. McCrowell, Sr. and (Laura) Elizabeth Carter McCrowell (both deceased). She was preceded in death by a beloved brother, Jim. A second-career pastor, she was an interim ministry specialist who had worked in eight different presbyteries of the PCUSA. Her last call, was to Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church of Steeles Tavern, VA. She served that congregation from August 2008 until August 2012. She was the author of several books. Her book, The Magdalene Legacy, was used as a resource by a British film company for a documentary. She also authored a book of poetry Essence of Autumn; a memoir, Dancing with a Kitchen Chair; an analysis of the American culture and the church as a social institution, The Judas Legacy; and a liturgical resource book, Sacred Bread and Holy Wine: Communion and Liturgical Poetry. She is survived by her daughter, Jean McCrowell, two brothers, O.M. McCrowell, Jr. (Grace), of Chase City, VA; Donald F. McCrowell (Della), of Ranier, WA; and one sister, Lillian McCrowell of Virgilina, VA. She held dear a special cousin, Kathy Staton Rion and a cherished niece, Jacque Bruce. Her memorial service will be held at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 7 P.M. officiated by the Rev. George Goodman. Sandra preferred that no memorial fund be established, but instead wished that donations be sent to Rockbridge Area Hospice (315 Myers St., Lexington, VA 24450). Her family thanks Rockbridge Area Hospice, who contributed toward her final months as ones of telling stories, not just discussing symptoms. The family is grateful to the medical and administrative staff and to the volunteers who comprise that organization.
