ADRIAN - Sandra Kay Keener, age 66, passed away Feb. 13, 2017, at the Hospice Home of Lenawee surrounded by her family. Sandy was born May 22, 1950, in Springfield, Ill. At the age of 9 the family moved to Galion, Ohio. She helped and cared for others her entire life. At age 15 she worked as an aide in a nursing home to earn money to attend Riverside Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio. There she received her R.N. diploma in 1971 and worked in the ICU at Riverside Methodist Hospital from 1971-1973. She met her husband, Don Keener, in Columbus and they were married July 17, 1970. They moved to Saginaw, Mich., where she worked in the ICU at Saginaw General Hospital from 1973-1976. In July of 1976 the couple moved to Adrian. In 1981, Sandy received a B.S. degree from Siena Heights College (University), and, in 1984, a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan. She began working at Lenawee Community Mental Health Authority in 1984 and worked there until her retirement in October 2016. During her tenure there, she held many positions including Life Consultation Program supervisor, director of the DD Unit, clinical director and executive director for the last four years. Her efforts were crucial to the growth and success of LCMHA. She will be remembered for her advocacy and commitment to the populations served by LCMHA. In addition to her husband, Don, Sandy is survived by her daughters, Karen Keener and Susan Burm (Joseph), and grandchildren, Ellie, Aaron and Andrew. She is also survived by her sisters, Candy Knouse and Marcia Pickering, and brothers, William Ralph and Greg Ralph. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Ralph and Mary Jonsson, and a brother, Mark Ralph. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at the Anderson Funeral Home, 3050 W. Beecher Road., Adrian. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. The family would like to give special thanks to the entire staff at the Hospice Home of Lenawee for their wonderful, loving care and thoughtfulness.
