Mr. Verello proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years, retiring as superintendent of transportation services for New York City. Following his retirement, he was a founding member of the Heart to Heart group at St. Michael's Hospital in Newark, volunteering for 20 years and eventually serving as the group's president. They provided comfort, levity, and at times comedic relief to men and women who faced open heart surgery. An avid sports fan, he played softball competitively with the Middlesex County Senior League until his formal retirement at the end of the 2016 season. Much to the chagrin of his wife and children, he continued to attempt to slide and break up double plays until the end of the 2015 season. He loved hunting, fishing, and traveling, especially visiting Italy for its rich history, culture, and far more importantly, food. In the later years of his life, he escaped the bitter northeast winds and spent his winters in sunny Naples, Fla. He was predeceased by his mother, Grace Repole Verello; sister, Dolores Verello; brothers, Frank and Thomas Verello, and his loving in-laws, Martin and Frances O'Brien. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Maureen O'Brien Verello; daughter, Grace France (husband Daniel); sons, Vincent (wife Helen), Samuel Jr. (wife Aida), Richard, and Daniel; grandchildren, Danielle, Danny Boy, Alexandra, Jessica and Anthony, and sister, Amelia Coletti, brother-in-law, Leo Coletti, and sister-in-law, Mickey Verello. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Sam's name to the Marine Corps Heritage Fund or a charity of your choice.
