Samuel Horace Mathis Samuel Horace Mathis, 79, died October 11, 2016 in Tallahassee after a long battle with leukemia. Sam was born in Tallahassee on June 10, 1937 to Gus and Doris Mathis. He graduated from Leon High School in 1955, after which he served in the US Army. He returned to Tallahassee after the Army and worked for the US Postal Service until his retirement in 1992. Sam played softball in Tallahassee for over 25 years. He loved spending time with friends on the golf course, where he was never short of a quip or light-hearted comment, and he took pride in breaking his age before falling ill. He dedicated hours to making his yard resemble a botanical garden. He enjoyed traveling. Sam is survived by his wife of 53 years - Doris Mathis. He is also survived by two children - Mike Mathis of Weston, FL, and Michelle Gendron (Bob Gendron) of Orlando - as well as six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and many friends and relatives. Sam was preceded in death by his parents and brothers - Bobby and Ronnie Mathis, as well as an infant brother. Graveside services will be held Friday, October 14, at 10:00 at MeadowWood Memorial Park on Timberlane Road.
