Lt. Col. Ret Samuel M. Dickerson
Beloved husband and father Sam has passed away from congestive heart failure. Born in Duluth, MN, he graduated from Duluth Central High School, and completed 2 years at Duluth State Teachers College. He moved to Ontario, CA, in May 1941 to attend Cal-Aero Academy, for flight training in the Army Air Forces. Sam met Charlotte Louise Nance in Ontario, and they married in July 1942, at Bethel Congregational Church. In 1944, during WWII, Sam was deployed as a B-25 pilot to Corsica, Italy, where he flew 62 combat missions and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross. Children Bob and Jane were born in 1946 and 1948. A career Air Force aviator, Sam flew the Berlin Airlift in 1949, spent a year on Iwo Jima in 1952, and had tours of duty in Washington, D.C., Washington state, Japan and California. Leaving the Air Force in 1965, Sam continued flying as a commercial pilot. He and Charlotte moved back to Upland, CA, in 1970, and Sam retired from flying in 1981. Sam was a devoted and loving husband and father, a loyal friend, a music lover, and had a great sense of humor. He lived in Ontario and Upland for over 42 of his nearly 96 years. He and Charlotte were married for almost 74 years, until her death in May 2016. He is survived by son Bob, granddaughter Kyla (husband Justin), great grandson Emry; and daughter Jane (husband Tandy), grandsons Ross (wife Nicole) and Kent (wife Fiona).
