Sam L. Stewart Jr.
Sam L. Stewart Jr., devoted family man, Auburn fan, and fire-breathing Annistonian, passed away on October 12, 2016. Sam's defining characteristic was his steadfast loyalty to any cause or team he committed to. Whether at work or at play, he had no time for second gear, much less neutral or reverse. His passion for life and love for others was contagious. Sam constantly developed new hobbies, from horseback riding to guitar, though he always downplayed his newfound skills. For Sam, family was his most important allegiance. He cherished his wife, Lisa and adored his children. For the last several years, Sam served faithfully as the Chairman, CEO, and Head of Security of Pop's Swim and Yacht Club, his eponymous backyard pool, which catered almost exclusively to his beloved children and grandchildren. Sam was both a fair- and foul-weather fan of Auburn football. In the good years, he insisted that Alabama fans were stuck in the past. In the bad ones, he reminded everyone to "throw the records out" because anything can happen in the Iron Bowl. And like any true fan, he passed away on the Tigers' bye week. Sam loved his hometown. He was a fourth-generation Annistonian and a 1971 graduate of Anniston High School. He founded Sam Stewart Formal Wear in 1976, which thereafter provided thousands of high school students with gowns, tuxedos, and even their first jobs. He also served a term as an Anniston city councilman and twelve years on the Board of Directors at Regional Medical Center, including a stint as Chairman. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Sam L. Stewart Sr. and Nita Worsham Stewart, and his sister, Pamela Ann Stewart. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Willis Stewart; his sons, Sam Stewart III (Tiffany) and Joey Stewart (Susanne); a daughter, Leela Williams; stepdaughters, Julie Claeren and Gina Morrison (Jason); grandchildren, Will Morrison, Mackenzie Stewart, Maylee Stewart, Shelby Stewart, Carter Stewart, Jacks Stewart, and Henry Jackson; a brother, Vaughn Stewart II (Alicia); a niece, Dacey Dunaway; nephews, Kirk Stewart, Vaughn Stewart III (Alex), and Dylan Dunaway, and an aunt, Charlotte Willingham. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at Parker Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Roland P. Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11-2 in the church parlor on the day of the funeral. Pallbearers will be Pat O'Brien, R.D. Downing, Robert Stewart, Mike Canada, Tyrone Young, and Larry May. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Anniston Soup Bowl, P.O. Box 2072, Anniston, AL 36202 or to the Alabama-Mississippi Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 813 Shades Creek Parkway, Suite 100B, Birmingham, AL 35209.
