Salomon Maese Sr.
Salomon Maese Sr., 96, passed away peacefully of natural causes on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016, in Houston, Texas. He was born in 1919 in Lamy to Maria Gurule Maese and Melquiades Maese. He was raised in Las Vegas and graduated from Normal High School where he played football, basketball and ran track. He also enjoyed boxing, bowling, and roller-skating. He proudly served in the Marine Corps during World War II in San Diego, New Caledonia, Eniwetok, Tinian, Saipan, Guam and Oakland. In 2012 he was honored by the Southern New Mexico Chapter of the National Honor Flight Network with a trip to the national monuments in Washington D.C. Salomon owned his own plumbing business for more than 50 years, and never really retired. He even introduced his sons and grandsons into the business. He enjoyed his work and loved visiting with people through his work. Always very social, in his younger years he enjoyed gathering with his friends at Mama Lucy's Restaurant. In later years, he routinely gathered with longtime friends at the Spic 'n' Span. Salomon most loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed golf, dancing, bowling, and watching football, musicals and westerns. Salomon was preceded in death by his mother and father, and by his brothers and sisters, Jesus Maese, Pauline Maese, Isabel Esquibel, Phil Maese, Manuel Maese, Rosie Hidalgo, Benerada Lujan, Alfonso Maese, and Joe Maese. He is survived by his children, Sallie Ann Ortiz (Alfonso Jr.) of Las Vegas, Salomon Maese Jr. (Dolores) of Las Vegas, Elmo Maese (Margaret) of Los Lunas, Brenda Oliveira (Luis) of Houston, Texas, and Maria Rojas (Art) of Commerce City, Colo.; his stepdaughters, Pamela Calloway (Leon) of Harker Heights, Texas and Cynthia Parsa (Morteza) of Sugar Land, Texas; 20 grandchildren, Alfonso Ortiz III, Rulene Ortiz, Kenneth Maese, Melissa Gold, Christen Aragon, Donnie Guerin, Jonathan Guerin, April Maese, Greg Maese, Elena Oliveira, Brian Oliveira, Mona Rojas, Emma Rojas, Leon Calloway Jr., Lauren Calloway, Lucas Calloway, Lane Calloway, Natasha Gonzales, Adam Parsa and Nicolle Parsa; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Services for Salomon will be held on Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Parish in Las Vegas. A Rosary at 9 a.m. will be followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., officiated by Salomon's cousin, Father George Salazar. Salomon will be laid to rest at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:15 p.m. Urnbearers will be Alfonso Ortiz III, Kenneth Maese, Greg Maese and Dick Valdez.
