McCulley Ruth Ann "Ruthie" Carmichael McCulley, 65, of Gahanna, Ohio, passed away suddenly on October 16, 2016, at Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital in Westerville. She was born on July 5, 1951 in Glen Dale, WV, daughter of Colleen Hefner Carmichael and the late Robert E. Carmichael. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Opal and Paul Hefner and paternal grandparents C. E. and Pearl Carmichael. In addition to her grandparents, she was preceded in death by her aunt and uncle Norma and Lester Berisford and a cousin Constance Hefner. Ruthie grew up in Moundsville, West Virginia, and was a member of the first graduating class at John Marshall High School. Prior to moving to Saudi Arabia in the late 70's, she was employed at Schenk Jepson Insurance Agency in Wheeling, WV. Since returning to the United States, she has lived in Gahanna, Ohio. At the time of her death, she was an employee of Celebrate Local at the Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio. Ruthie was a kind and gentle person with an infectious laugh. You could not walk away from a conversation with her without a smile on your lips and a song in your heart. She loved to cook and bake, and published a cookbook in 1979 which included many of her favorite recipes. Ruthie was extremely proud of winning second place for her apple pie in the pie baking contest sponsored by Country Living magazine at the Ohio State Fair. She was a member of Stonybrook United Methodist Church in Gahanna, Ohio, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a volunteer worker for Hoagy's Heroes, Inc. a 501(c)(3) organization. In addition to her mother, Ruthie is survived by her two daughters, Courtney Allison McCulley of Moundsville, WV, and Holly Marie McCulley of Gahanna, Ohio; sister, Susan Carmichael of Bonita Springs, Florida; brother, Robert Lee "Hoagy" (Amy) Carmichael of Glen Dale, West Virginia; nephew, Hoagy (Bridget) Carmichael; niece, Charity Carmichael; great nieces, Azalea and Rylee Carmichael; and great nephew, Mason Carmichael. Also surviving are her aunts and uncles, Rosemary and Jim Kirchner, and Thomas and Jean Hefner; cousins, Tommy, Cathy, Carol, Eddie, Debbie, Pam, and Butch; and numerous friends. A celebration of Ruthie's life will be held on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 7 p.m., at Stonybrook United Methodist Church, 485 Cherry Bottom Road, Gahanna, Ohio. Her family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. prior to the service. Private inurnment will be held at the convenience of the family.
