Russell S. Holland
Russell S. Holland, age 87, of Elkton , MD, passed away at Calvert Manor Healthcare Center, Rising Sun, MD, on Tuesday, January 10, 2017. Born in 1929 in Westerly, RI, he was the son of the late Talbot and Varina (Krebs) Holland of Westerly. He was a graduate of Brown University and earned his PhD in Chemistry from Princeton University in 1955. He held positions in R&D and Marketing in the DuPont Photo Products Department in Parlin, NJ and Wilmington, DE, and was most notable for his specialization in medical x-ray imaging physics. He was a member of several professional and technical societies, including the Society of Sigma Xi, American Chemical Society, Society of Photographic Scientists and Engineers, and Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers. Russ retired from DuPont in 1990. He was active in several community and volunteer pursuits, serving for many years as president, treasurer and director of the Glen Farms Civic Association. He volunteered for the Cecil County Men's Shelter, Elkton Community Kitchen, Meeting Ground, and on the Boards of the Appleton Regional Community Alliance and the Cecil County Library Trust. He was active as a member, Elder, and choir member of Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church, Newark, DE, and enjoyed lifelong pursuits in choral singing with several groups and in photography. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Margaret (McNeilage) Holland; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Joseph Roeske, Salem, NJ; grandchildren, Elizabeth Roeske, Pittsburgh, PA, and Joseph Roeske, Washington, DC. He is also survived by his sister, Majorie Duerr, Westerly, RI; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, David, in 1994; and brother, Leonard, in 2013. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church, 1100 W. Church Road, Newark, DE 19711. Burial in Head of Christiana Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Deep Roots Inc., 21 Veazey Cove Road, Earleville, MD 21919, or Cecil County Public Library Foundation, 301 Newark Avenue, Elkton, MD 21921.
