At an early age she moved with her family to Panhandle, Texas, where her family operated a Gulf service station. Driven from West Texas by the Depression, the family moved to Fort Worth when Ruby was a teenager so her father could obtain work in the "bomber plant," now known as Lockheed. She graduated from Trimble Tech High School where she met her husband, Albert, while practicing for the senior play. On May 8, they celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary. During and after World War II, she and Albert lived in Fort Worth where they raised three sons. In 1990, Ruby and Albert retired to Granbury. Ruby was very active in Sagamore Hill Baptist Church before moving to Granbury when she transferred her membership to Acton Baptist Church. She also thrived in the study of her family's history. Her community activities included the Six Flags Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she was past regent and state committee chairman. She was a vice president and chairman of the Tarrant County Historical Commission and past president of the Tarrant County Historical Society. She served as an officer of the Fort Worth Genealogical Society and was on the Oakwood Cemetery executive board. Ruby instructed numerous classes in genealogy at Tarrant County College and TCU. In 1984, she edited the book, Fort Worth & Tarrant County, A Historical Guide, a project of the Tarrant County Historical Society. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, George Sidney Jackson and Maudie America Lewis Jackson; as well as her eldest son, William "Bill" Albert Schmidt Jr. Also preceding her in death was her daughter-in-law, Lisa Schmidt.
