In memory of
Roy Lee Winchester, age 91, of Bethlehem, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at the Masonic Home in Shelbyville. Roy was born September 14, 1925, in Science Hill, to Leonard and Myrtie Winchester. A graduate of Science Hill High School, Roy continued in education his whole life serving as teacher, coach, and superintendent of Henry County Schools, until his retirement from the school board in 2010. An avid University of Kentucky fan, Roy was recognized throughout the state as a coach of golf, basketball and football. Perhaps, however, he is best remembered as a high school basketball official for 25 years having called 10 "Sweet Sixteen" Boy's State Basketball Tournaments. He was inducted into the Dawahare/KHSAA Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 preceding the naming of the gymnasium at Henry County High School in his honor to Roy L. Winchester Gymnasium. Married to Zelma Peyton Winchester for 69 years, the couple had four children, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Navy. The funeral service was held Saturday, October 15, 2016, at 11 a.m. with visitation at Sholar Funeral Home in Pleasureville.
