JACKSONVILLE, FL - Vietnam Veteran Roy Harland Hartless passed away in his sleep on the morning of October 14, 2016. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on February 25, 1941 to the late Wilbert and Mary Hartless. He is survived by his brother Kenneth Hartless of Jacksonville and sister Frances Larson Newport News, VA and Linda Coley of Lynchburg, VA, daughter Patricia Boykin, grandson Jacob Smeland and wife all in Virginia, and numerous nieces and nephews. And also very close friends Dotty Morea and Joanne Ford. Roy was preceded in death by his wife Katherine Keats Hartless and daughter Lisa Simpson. After high school, Roy enlisted in the Army and served in Germany. He left the service and enrolled in and subsequently graduated from William and Mary. He joined the college ROTC unit and went back in the Army as a commissioned officer. While in the Army as an officer, he served in Okinawa and then Vietnam. He was assigned to a unit near Saigon and was the Commander of a Military Police Unit. He left the Army, married and settled into being a small contractor in Newport News, VA. In the late 1990's he retired and relocated to Jacksonville to live with his brother Kenneth. He was everyone's friend and handyman - if you needed a sink put in or roof repaired or a shed built, call Roy. He was an avid golfer and good racquetball player, enjoyed gardening and loved sharing his favorite vegetables. Most of all, he was a perfect gentleman and was always thinking of others. Even after his death he was thinking about us; he donated his body to the University of Florida Medical Center for research and also because he thought it to be inconvenient for us, he asked that no memorial or funeral services be held. You may honor Roy with donations to the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville FL 32257. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage Giddens, 729 Edgewood Ave. South, Jacksonville FL 32205.
