Roland Stanley Harris Jr.
Roland Stanley Harris Jr.,90, of Hartford, Hartford's First African American School Administrator, died on Monday, January 9, 2017 at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford. Born on June 16, 1926 of the late Roland Stanley Harris Sr. and the late Josephine Harcum Harris, Roland was a resident of Hartford, CT for his entire life. Roland was a graduate of Howard University, received a Master's Degree in School Administration from Central Connecticut State University, attended Hartford Public High School (Class of '44) and was a World War II Army Veteran. Roland's career in the Hartford School System began in 1953 as a sixth grade teacher where he demonstrated a capacity for understanding the needs of children from diverse backgrounds and an ability to inspire their success. He was a mentor to many minority school teachers and administrators who continue to serve students throughout CT. Roland retired from education in 1997 after serving 25 years as the Principal of West Middle School. He left a legacy of serving the needs of children with passion and a commitment to excellence. Roland was a life- long member of the Union Baptist Church in Hartford, a member of the Omega PSI PHI Fraternity, Masons Excelsior Lodge and was recently honored with a lifetime achievement award for "Teaching Excellence" by the One Hundred Men of Color organization. Roland married the late Anita McKenzie Harris in 1950. They were devoted to each other until her passing in 1983. This marriage resulted in four children. Roland was a dedicated and loving father to Roland S. Harris III (Malinda), Jacqueline A. Harris Taback, M.D., Rev. Gail L. Harris Williams (Wendell) and Nancy L. Harris who mourn his loss. He was an outstanding grandfather to Roland Harris IV, Tiffany Harris, Rachel Taback, Regina Harriat (Paul), Raymond Jones, Matthew Henderson, Myles Olufemi and great grandfather to Jayvn Harris and Christina Harriat. Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother Donald F. Harris, Sr and his sister Ruth Harris Wright. His desire to be present in all of their lives was the foundation of the success each has had and their sense of wellbeing and fulfillment. He will be missed. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, January 14 at the Union Baptist Church, 1921 Main St Hartford. His family will receive friends prior to the service from 9 AM to 11 AM with a Omega Memorial Service at 9:45 AM. Burial will be private.
