SHELBY - Roger Hilton Kendrick, 77, of Shelby, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, at Testa Family Hospice House in Kings Mountain. Born November 22, 1939, in Cleveland County, Mr. Kendrick was the son of the late Thomas Grady and Pearl Moore Kendrick and was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Reynolds; a brother, Tommy Kendrick; and three brothers-in-law, John Reynolds, Richard Holmes and Mitchell Clary. Roger Kendrick was a faithful and loving husband and father. Roger was a kid at heart and enjoyed playtime with his grandchildren. He was always up for anything, as long as his grandchildren were happy. From tea parties to tadpoles, to tents and riding tractors, time spent with "Papaw" was always fun. Roger was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and member of numerous committees. Roger worked and retired as a supervisor after 31 years of service from Hoechst Celanese Corporation. Because of Roger's strong work ethic, he continued to farm and supported the startup of Shelby Pools. Throughout his life, he was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish and was an expert marksman. Roger was a wise and humble mentor. He also enjoyed restoring classic cars, collecting John Deere tractors and was the neighborhood fix-it-man. In fact, his motto was "If man made it, I can fix it." He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nell Rollins Kendrick of the home; two children, Kim Hartsock and husband Jeff of Concord, and Darren Kendrick and wife Helen of Shelby; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Hartsock, Noah Hartsock, Kensley Kendrick and Katie Kendrick; four sisters, Donnis Holmes of Marshville, Marilyn Ferree and husband Jack of Shelby, Nancy Clary of Cary, and Norma Poston and husband Dan of Shelby. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, at Cleveland Funeral Services. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, 2017, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Andrew Corley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 2338 Pleasant Hill Church Road, Grover, NC 28073, or to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby NC 28150.
