DEAKINS--Roger Lee. Age 82, died on October 3, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Decatur, Il on December 4, 1933, son of Marie Lucille Conlon and Byron Floyd Deakins, he was educated at University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana (BA and Phi Beta Kappa) and Harvard University (MA and PhD in English Literature). He moved to New York City in 1965 and taught English Literature (Shakespeare) at New York University for 34 years. He was also Director of Undergraduate Studies and received the first NYU Distinguished Teaching Award as well as the Golden Dozen Award. After retirement, he became an avid bicyclist at both local and state levels and worked for environmental justice in the Bronx. As an active member in the Penn South Senior Center, he participated in social service and drama activities, and at Judson Memorial Church, he worked for social and civic justice. Throughout his life, he was loved for the special twinkle in his eye and his extraordinary gentleness of spirit. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Alice, three children - Lucy (Ian Kolsky), Cat (Mac Quayle), and Ned (Chelsea Malone) - and six grandchildren. A celebration of his life will take place on December 3 at 10am at Judson Memorial Church on Washington Square South. Donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation or Judson Memorial Church.
