Roger Neal Carpenter, 88, died Saturday, April 15, 2017. He was born Nov. 4, 1928 in Indianapolis, to the late Carl and Dorthea Carpenter. Roger was raised in Fort Wayne and graduated from North Side High School as a Redskin. He served his country in the Marine Corps. from 1947 to 1949 and then joined the Army before being discharged with honors in 1952. Roger was married to Alice Joan Darnell in 1954 and she preceded him in death in 2004. He worked for Tokheim, John Dehner Construction as a bookkeeper from 1962 to 1989 and several other jobs followed to avoid retirement. Surviving are his children; Candy Eastman, Lisa (George) Gerdes, Tammie (Gary) Hake, Tina Carpenter, Tracey Carpenter, Amy Gabbard and Neil Carpenter; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of friends at VFW Post 5582 in Columbia City. He was preceded in death by three sisters, a brother, a granddaughter and grandson and a son-in-law. Military honors will be rendered at 2 p.m. Friday, April 21 at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Rd., Fort Wayne, with viewing from noon to 2 p.m. Entombment will follow in Covington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
